If you are a keen watcher of Marathi television, Shanyana is a name you must be well-versed with. The character played by Isha Keskar in Mazhya Navryachi Bayko, is popular and a household name today. Shanaya is the other woman in Gurunath’s (Abhijeet Khandkekar) life and has more than 50 shades of grey to her. She’s feisty, gullible and sometimes, selfish. And yet, the entertaining side to her keeps the audiences hooked. Isha plays the part with aplomb and even shares great chemistry with her co-star Abhijeet. Shanaya and Gurunath may undergo their share of ups and downs on the show, but off-screen, Isha and Abhijeet’s equation is rock solid.

In an exclusive chat with us, Isha says that Abhijeet is a “dear friend’ and also like a “mentor” to her. “I have always knocked on his door for career advice, and other things. Since we stay in the same society, we have hung out a couple of times, watched cricket matches together etc. Even Anita, (Kelkar, lead actress on the show who plays Gurunath’s wife Radhika) stays close by and even though I have shifted out recently, we all still share that friendly equation,” she says.
Isha adds that it didn’t take much time for the three of them to break the ice on set. “To our surprise, it didn’t even take us a lot of time to cooperate with each other when working together. It all just happened in the blink of an eye. They are very good actors and have been very supportive. I can’t match their experiences but I’m glad that I am comfortable in working with such seasoned actors, says Isha. Ask her whether acting was always on the cards for her and Isha says that it simply took it’s own course.
“Acting honestly just happened to me, through my college group. There was a theatre group in college and my friends asked me to join it, saying that it will improve my skills and personality altogether. But eventually I ended up becoming an actress.” Isha adds that she would advise all young girls who are aspiring to be an actress like her, to hone their skills with some experience in theatre. “It teaches you how to deal with situations where you have to play a difficult role. It’s the first step into becoming an actor. It will change you internally and prepare you for the long haul.”
The actress also talks about how she feels responsible towards her fans, being a public figure. “As an actor, I feel it’s my responsibility in responding to audiences that approach me. When people admire my work I consider it as a big deal because they are the ultimate god, nothing can beat them.”
