Ganesh Chaturthi Special: 5 Modak Recipes You Can Try This Festive Season!

With the traditional recipe of Ukdiche Modak, we present you some unique recipes like Vegetable Modak, Fried Modak and more.

1. Ukdiche Modak

One of the most popular festivals celebrated in India is Ganesh Chaturthi and it is just around the corner. If you belong to a Maharashtrian family or know someone who does, then you might be aware of the special dish made for the beloved deity which is Modak.

The popular version of Modak is known as Ukdiche Modak and it is loved by all but in different parts of the state, the style of cooking changes. Today we bring you some varieties of Modak that you would love to try this Ganesh Chaturthi.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups rice flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Oil
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup grated Jaggery
  • 1 tbsp Poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp Green cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg powder

Directions:

  • Heat 2 cups water with salt and 1 tsp oil in a kadai.
  • Add 1 1/2 cups rice flour and stir continuously to prevent lumps.
  • Let it cook for three minutes.
  • Move the mixture to a plate.
  • Now grease your hands with oil and knead the dough.
  • Cover the dough with a cotton cloth.
  • Take a frying pan and add 1 cup grated coconut and 1 cup grated jaggery.
  • Cook it for two minutes.
  • Add the roasted poppy seeds, cardamom powder and nutmeg powder.
  • Now divide the dough into equal portions and shape them into balls.
  • Make sure to grease the palms of your hands.
  • Now spread the ball in the shape of a cup.
  • Place a portion of the stuffing in the centre and pleat the edges of the dough.
  • Gather all the pleats together to form a bundle.
  • Pinch to seal the edges at the top.
  • Heat water in a steamer and place the modaks inside.
  • Steam them for 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Once done, serve them hot with ghee.

2. Papaya Modak

Here’s what you need for the recipe,

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of rice flour
  • 1 cup chopped Papaya
  • 1 tbsp khawa
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp cashew
  • 1 tbsp charmagaz (melon seeds)
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 3 tsp saffron milk
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp powdered jaggery

Directions:

  • Take a frying pan and roast 1 tbsp poppy seeds and move it to a bowl.
  • Next add 1 tbsp cashews, 1 tbsp charmagaz, 1 tsp ghee to the frying pan and roast them.
  • Move them to another bowl.
  • Add 1 cup chopped papaya, 1 tbsp powdered jaggery, 1 tbsp khawa, 2 tsp poppy seeds, 2 tsp fried nuts, 1 tsp cardamom powder, 1 tsp Kesar milk in the frying pan.
  • Now take another Kadai and add 1 1/4 cup water, 1 tsp Kesar milk, 1 tsp salt and 1 cup rice flour.
  • Once the rice flour is dry, cover the Kadai with a lid.
  • Move the rice flour dough into plate.
  • Meanwhile, ready the steamer and grease it with oil.
  • Now Take a portion of the dough and add the filling in the centre.
  • Gather all the pleats together to form a bundle.
  • Pinch to seal the edges at the top.
  • Keep the modaks in the steamer for 10 to 12 minutes
  • Once done, serve it hot.

3. Paneer Mawa Modak

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup rice flour dough
  • 1 tbsp mawa
  • 1 cup jaggery
  • 1 cup shredded paneer
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp dry fruits powder
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions:

  • Take a kadai and add 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp mawa, 1 cup shredded paneer, 1 cup shredded coconut, 1 cup jaggery, 1 tsp cardamom powder, 2 tsp dry fruits powder and 1 tsp salt.
  • Once done, let it cool down.
  • Now take the modak mould and grease it with oil.
  • Add rice flour and filling.
  • Similarly, create more modaks.
  • Heat the steamer and grease it with oil.
  • Keep the modaks in the steamer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • And serve it hot.

4. Vegetable Modak

Expect the unexpected with this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice flour dough
  • 1 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tsp peanut powder
  • 1 cup Beetroot skin
  • 1 cup carrot skin
  • 2 tsp roasted cashew
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 cup cucumber skin
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp black cumin
  • 1 tsp roasted sesame seeds
  • ghee
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds powder
  • 1 tsp green chilli paste
  • 1 tsp lemon
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions:

  • Take a mixer jar and add 1 cup beetroot skin, 1 cup carrot skin, 1 cup cucumber skin, 1 tbsp grated coconut, 2 tsp roasted cashew, 1 tsp poppy seeds, 1 tsp roasted sesame seeds and grind it.
  • Take a frying pan and add 1 tsp ghee, 1 tsp black cumin and the mixture.
  • Next add 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander seeds powder, 1 tsp green chilli paste, 1 tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp peanut powder and mix it.
  • Move it to a bowl and let it cool down.
  • Take a Modak mould and grease it with oil.
  • Add the whole wheat flour dough inside the mould and add the filling.
  • Heat the steamer and grease it with oil.
  • Once done, add the modaks in the steamer and wait for 20 minutes.

5. Fried Modak

Especially for those who love it fried!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsps ghee
  • 1 ½ cups grated coconut
  • 3/4 cup chopped jaggery
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1/4 tsp green cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup refined flour
  • Oil

Directions:

  • Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a non-stick pan.
  • Add grated coconut,3/4 cup jaggery and cook till it melts.
  • Add 1 tbsp poppy seeds, 1/4 tsp green cardamom powder, 1 tsp salt and mix well.
  • Transfer the mixture into a bowl and let it cool down.
  • Take a bowl and 1/2 cup wheat flour, 1/2 cup refined flour, 1 tsp salt and 1 tbsp ghee.
  • Add some water to knit the dough.
  • Keep it aside for 10-15 minutes.
  • Now divide the dough into equal portions and shape them into balls.
  • Make sure to grease the palms of your hands.
  • Now spread the ball in the shape of a cup.
  • Place a portion of the stuffing in the centre and pleat the edges of the dough.
  • Gather all the pleats together to form a bundle.
  • Pinch to seal the edges at the top.
  • Next, heat enough oil in a kadai.
  • Add modaks and deep fry on medium heat till they turn golden brown in colour.
