1. Aarif Zakaria as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
ZEE5’s original Marathi series Hutatma tells the story of the Samyukta movement, that led to the creation of Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. After a successful stint with season 1, the show has returned with season 2 which explores the movement in detail. Starring Anjali Patil, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi, Sachin Khedekar, Vikram Gokhale among others, the series focuses on Maharashtra’s history through Vidyut’s (Anjali) personal journey of finding and punishing the culprit who murders her father.

There are many real-life political figures and activists that have been featured in the series. All these personalities were associated with the Samyukta movement in a small and big way. We start the list with India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Everyone is familiar with his contribution as a PM but many aren’t aware of how his decisions shaped up the Samyukta movement.
The Congress post independence had pledged to create separate linguistic states but Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel changed their stand as they thought doing this would hurt the integrity of India. Nehru proposed that there should be a bi-lingual state of Maharashtra-Gujarat, with Mumbai as its capital. However this decision of PM was met with criticism and violent protests.
2. Morarji Desai
Morarji Desai was an Indian independence activist, who served as the fourth Prime Minister of India and led the government that was formed by the Janata Party. During his career, he also served as the chief minister of Bombay state. He was in favour of Nehru’s decision to create the bi-lingual state of Maharashtra-Gujarat and was met with equal amount of criticism.
3. Manok Kolhatkar as Shripad Amrit Dange
Shripad Amrit Dange was the founding member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was arrested by the British rulers for carrying out communist activities and was in prison for 13 years. He was one of the leading activists of the Samyukta movement along with others such as Shreedhar Mahadev Joshi, Narayan Ganesh Gore etc.
4. Kshitij Zarapkar as Yashwantrao Chavan
Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan was the first chief minister of Maharashtra after the division of the state and also served as the fifth depute Prime Minister of India. He was an influential congress leader and would advocate the idea of democracy in all his speeches. He was responsible for establishing co-operatives in Maharashtra, for the well-being of farmers.
5. Anand Ingle as Pralhad Keshav Atre
Pralhad Keshav Atre was a prominent Marathi writer and a celebrated poet as well as educationist. He founded the newspaper called Maratha. He was also known for his impeccable oratory skills. Pralhad was an active member of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti.
